Justin Trudeau : the Prime Minister who rocks

First Canadian Prime Minister with a
tattoo
An amateur boxer
with a tattoo of a stylized raven on his left arm, the new Canadian PM is not
your typical politician. This married father of 3 loves mingling with the crowd
and appearing in front of the cameras with his family. He is called “the
Canadian Kennedy” and is often compared with Prince William of England. “We’d
better get used to it, because it’s just the beginning. We are building a
Justin Trudeau brand. We treat him as a trademark and not just as a PM. He is a
real brand that gets people excited” says Louis Aucoin, an expert in public image.
Justin is the son of Elliott Trudeau, who was Prime
Minister of Canada for 15 years during the 1970s and 1980s, but he is far from
following in his father’s footsteps.
He never
wanted to become a politician in the first place. In his twenties, he graduated
with a degree in English Literature and Educational Sciences, then became a
French teacher in Vancouver. But that wasn't his vocation. He travelled the
world in search of his identity, working occasionally as snowboard instructor, rafting guide and waiter in a
bar.
He
became more active in the political arena after his father’s death, but the
real change occurred in 2007, when he ran in a by-election in the Montreal
riding of Outremont. Then he climbed the political ladder all the way to the top.
Trudeau won the leadership of the Liberal Party in April 2013, and went on to
lead his party to victory in the 2015 federal elections.
‘‘Because
it’s 2015 ! ’’
During
a recent cabinet presentation, journalists asked Trudeau : "Why a gender
balanced government?” His response came out spontaneously: “Because it's 2015
!”
But
gender equality is not the only change that Justin Trudeau wants to establish
in Canada: legalizing marijuana and welcoming migrants are among his top
priorities. He also promised to increase taxes on the rich and reduce
them for the middle class.
And
these are not the typical promises that politicians make to win elections :
Trudeau actually lives up to his word. He recently called on Canada’s newly appointed
Minister of Justice Jody Wilson-Raybould to look into starting the process of
marijuana legalization.
Moreover, on
December 13, he personally welcomed the first Syrian immigrants to Canada. “You came out of this plane as refugees and you will leave
this airport as permanent Canadian residents with a social security number, a
health care card and an opportunity to become fully Canadian,” said Trudeau.
“This day will be remembered”, he added before welcoming the Syrian families,
often mothers and children. At least 10,000 Syrian refugees will find shelter
in Canada by 2016.
One
thing is certain : Justin Trudeau packs a powerful punch.
